A
SIP OF YOUR WINE (Lake/Baysting)
I promise you this is not just a line
I been hoping for such a long long time
all I'm asking of you
is just a little sip of your wine
I'm not asking - please don't misunderstand -
I don't wanna seem rude but I wanna ask you if I can
would it be too much to ask for
a little sip of your wine
A little taste of that wine in your glass
a little thing to help us forget the past
a little sip to maybe make us both laugh
and make things turn out different to what they maybe would
have
Who knows the consequences, come what may
if you just give me a smile, hold out your glass and you say
`I don't mind if you want a little sip ----'
And if you just did that well I have to confess
what might happen is anybody's guess -
I'd have to get a grip or I might start to slip--
if you just held out your hand with that glass in there
I'd lick it on my tongue
I'd run it all around and
I'd say thank you
for a little sip of your wine
I'd say thank you and maybe we could meet another time
and you could maybe have a little sip of mine.
GIRL IN THE MOON (GOD MET SATAN) (Lake/Baysting)
God met Satan and Satan met God
They sat right down to talk about the odds
God got loose and Satan got tight
Satan he challenged God to a fight
He says give me an angel - show me a saint
Give her to me - and I'll show you she ain't
Find me a woman of the innocent kind
For just one day, and I'll make her mine
God gets up, God goes away.
Comes back with a girl, and he says OK?
She's such a beauty, Satan he smiles
Says you and me we gonna dance for a while
They dance all day. They dance out of sight.
Satan he dance with her all of the night
The girl she's laughin', she whistles a tune
She flies in the sky, and up to the moon
And she never comes back again
And Satan he goes insane
He says gimme my angel, give her to me soon
I want another dance with that girl in the Moon.
Satan he prays and he screams like a loon
The woman just smiles and whistles a tune
And God says `girl, I don't quite understand, what you doin'?'
The woman just smiles and whistles a tune.
MARGARET (Lake/Baysting)
Beautiful, as a woman gets Oh, Margaret
Beautiful, as a woman gets Oh, Margaret
Think about the situation
Give it your consideration
Oh Maggie don't you hesitate
The boat is ready and I'm here waiting
Oh, won't you come away with me
Oh, won't you come away with me
We could do anything I could play and you could sing
Oh, I'm counting on you
Beautiful, as a woman gets Oh, Margaret
Beautiful, as a woman gets Oh, Margaret
They telling you to stay at home
play it safe or you'll end up alone
Maggie don't you hesitate
The boat is ready and I'm still waiting
Oh, we'll never get another chance
Oh, we'll never get another chance
we could leave it all behind run away and lose our minds
Oh, I'm counting on you
Beautiful, as a woman gets Oh, Margaret
Beautiful, as a woman gets Oh, Margaret
SNOW ON THE DESERT ROAD (Bryant)
Snow on the Desert Road
could make us late for work
could make us late for love
could make us apt for play
could make us ache for home
snow on the Desert Road
Snow on the Desert Road
not raging, not screaming
not open, not dreaming
not much to escape to
Three ugly sisters to drink to
me next, me next, me next
sing the Eumenides
You wanna be my love
you wanna share my snow
you wanna work it on out baby twist and shout
I'll take you where we have to go
Pure and perfect
snow on the roof
fire in the loins and lights
fire in the veins
I spy with my beady eye
something beginning with death
snow on the Desert Road
But not uncommonly
the sun shines,
and sometimes
the staunch white volcano
brilliantly bounces back
the rude euphoria of that
mens sana in corpore sano nonsense
there's more than one kind of sunshine
on the Desert Road.
IF I WERE YOU (Lake/Baysting)
You don't know what you want
so wait a while and then we'll see
I know we could be one
if I were you and you were me
If I were you and you were me
who knows what we might see
If I were you and you were me
I'm just too weak to fight
against a thing so strong
Just think about that night
a thing like that it can't be wrong
If I were you and you were me
who knows what we might see
If I were you and you were me
and I know you feel just what I feel
I can't let it go, don't you let it go
say you will say you will say you will
One day our ship will come
the unlikely story will come true
We'll frighten everyone
if you were me and I were you
If I were you and you were me
who knows what we might see
If I were you and you were me
PLAYING WITH THE GYPSIES (Lake/Baysting/Saunders)
My mother said I never should
play with the gypsies in the wood
if I did she would cry
"you're a dirty boy and you're not one of mine"
Playing with the gypsies
Playing with the gypsies
Went to the river couldn't get across
paid ten dollars for a blind white horse
Horse jumped up and we fell down
I got away but Georgie drowned
Playing with the gypsies
Playing with the gypsies
The wood was dark and the grass was green
along came Georgie with his tambourine
the wood was dark and the grass was green
My mother said I never should
play with the gypsies in the wood
I listened to the music and that was that
tell my mother I won't be back
Playing with the gypsies
Playing with the gypsies
I'm a dirty boy
FRANK'S
OTHER HALF (Lake)
She was a nurse, you could tell
fulsome, wholesome, comely, seemly, wifely, homely.
A bit earnest? Quite likely.
So different from Frank:
grizzled and frizzled and fried
flaky, greying, red-faced and red-eyed
ran a restaurant so he could have a smoke
and a drink or two and still stay afloat
Frank's other half would always be there,
lying white and warm and welcoming
when he stumbled out of his clothes
smelling of cigarettes and beer
in the early morning.
See she was a nurse: she wasn't scared of anything
and she knew the body, every part
what did she see in him, and he in her?
Each other's other half.
In the restaurant Frank had this big photo blown up, taller
than life
was it John Wayne? Clint Eastwood?
Rambling Jack if I remember right
Now there's lots of guys out there like Frank
who would like to have put up a picture like that
but Frank did put it up; and she put up with Frank.
I suppose you're waiting for something awful to happen
I know we all used to
but this story don't go nowhere
it just makes you wonder
where's your other half?
And would you know her if you saw her
no matter how unlikely she seemed?
and would she recognise you?
mine didn't recognise me
CONTRACT
WITH THE BLUES (Bryant/Spittle)
I got a contract with the blues
I was quite green when I signed
He smiled as he put my pen away
said, I thought you must be blind
but your eyes look kind of open
I guess these things are in your mind
but sonny, you now have a contract with the blues
I'm under contract to the blues
and I made the choice myself
it hasn't cost me that much
just my house, my wives, my health
but I deny I lost myself
along the road to fame and wealth
and I got a contract with the blues
Feeling sorry for myself again
if I don't, no-one will
once again the game has gone
arseholes ten, nice guys nil
and I doubt if I'll feel better
till I really drink my fill
cos there's a clause here in my contract
says I pays for every thrill
I'm signed up with Mr Blues
and he says I'll see the sights
he'll show me how the show-folks love
and other strange delights
A lush life long time dying
wasted days and poison nights
and I got a contract with the blues
Yes, I'm signed to Mr Blues
and the ink looks kind of red
but I'm on the dotted line
guess it runs until I'm dead
and if I'd read between the pages
or heard what the experts said
I'd still have had a contract with the blues
SWIMMING (Lake/Baysting)
I went to the river, looked right in
I jumped in the river and I started to swim
the water was clear, the water was blue
I was swimming fast I'm telling you
I was swimming babe - I'm telling you
Somebody grabbed my shoulder, pulled me up on my feet
saying hey what are you doing buddy, swimming in the street
and I looked down - I had no shoes -
my clothes were dirty, I was so confused
Went to the doctor, she said I'm OK
She said there's lots of people thinking funny things today
My advice to you - don't let it get you down
keep on swimming or you gonna drown
Keep on swimming - or you're gonna drown
...if you can talk then you can sing
if you can walk, then you can dance that thing
TV
BLUES (Lake/Baysting/Simpson)
Couple in the lounge
ready to fight
over which heap of shit
they're gonna watch tonight
they got the tv blues
anytime you choose
it'll be ok
you can watch all day
how could anyone refuse
to get the tv blues
Couple in church
just got wed
run back home
and jump into bed
she gonna blow a fuse
he wants to watch the news
he don't realise
just look in his eyes
he's got the tv blues
turn off the lights
get up real close
blue shadow
strong dose
It's the tv blues
and it's so uncouth
I watch the news
but I never get the truth
that's the tv blues
anytime you choose
take off your socks
and turn on the box
take off your shoes
and dance
to the tv blues....
CORNER (Bryant)
When did we turn the corner
I'm sure I don't remember
How do you read the road sign
astride the broken line
Never had it so good you're thinking
never noticed the sun is sinking
What does it signify
when you have turned the corner
Who is this ache that lingers
I don't know if I should remember
How do you hear the answer
or see the question
It was going too well
you get used to the pain
You don't need to name her name
when you have passed the corner
Around the bend
is where we're bent
You said, I thought if we leant with it
We'd ride it out
Five years love and friendship
I can't help but remember
As I couldn't help loving you
cute when drunk
cuter when drunker
Never had it so good, so good, so good
never noticed the bitch's drinking
What could it signify
how could it signify
Were we doing some signifying
Somewhere round the corner.
