Compelled to learn an instrument by a teacher keen on folk music, Andrew took up the harmonica at primary school. He later discovered blues and jug band music and played with a number of groups around Wellington and in Auckland with the Mad Dog Jug Band. Recruited to the Strugglers in the mid 70s, he now also plays guitar and mandolin.
